RCMP Works on Recruitment Incentives

In an effort to improve RCMP recruiting efforts, the government will now pay RCMP cadets $500 a week for their 24-week training period. The RCMP also covers cadet expenses for travel to the RCMP Training Academy in Regina, Saskatchewan, uniforms, training courses and room and board.

The RCMP is hoping to recruit more than 8000 new officers over the next five years, which is equivalent to nearly half of the current strength of the force. It won't be easy to meet that target though, since there is intense competition for young people in Canada and the selection and training process to become a Mountie is rigorous. As well as providing cadets with a training allowance, the RCMP has reduced application processing times from an average of nearly 300 days to 83 days. They are also making efforts to accommodate officer deployment preferences, and to inform cadets of their likely postings before the end of the application process.
